Craig hit the button for the 16th floor, wondering what time it was. He rolled his shoulders, trying to work out a kink there. He’d taken the test kits to the lab, then driven and walked through the city for the five hours it had taken them to finish. He’d been on a mission that had two purposes. He’d been looking for Hawk, half-heartedly, as he believed what he’d told JT about Hawk going to ground at night, but more importantly, he’d been thinking hard, trying to figure out who could possibly be behind what was going on. Vivian worked closer with Hawk in the office, but for the last year, she’d been busy with the twins and more recently, Craig had been taking up the slack. He’d come up with only one name, and that guy was in prison.

Craig pushed into the office to find JT sleeping fitfully on the couch, and Vivian pacing the room in stockinged feet while Emma read names to her off of a printout she held in front of her from a secretary’s desk.

Vivian looked up at him. “Well?”

He held up a hand. “I need to tell you something first. I called the cops on the way to the lab and reported Hawk as a missing person.”

Vivian nodded. “Good.”

Craig raised his eyebrows. He wasn’t sure why, but he’d expected more of a reaction out of her. He handed her the form the lab had given him.

She read through it quickly. “DMSO? What is that?”

Emma spoke from behind the desk. “Dimethyl sulfoxide. It’s an industrial solvent that has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.”

Craig held up a finger. “It’s also a potent carrier agent that causes any substance it’s mixed with to be taken directly through the skin into the body.”

Emma pulled the laptop on the desk towards her and her fingers flew over the keys. She talked excitedly as she typed. “It smells like garlic, doesn’t it?”

Craig gave her a bright smile. “You’re so smart, Lieutenant Masterson.”

Vivian ignored them and read through the rest of the report. “Someone has been painting our doorknobs with a mixture of DMSO, testosterone, synthetic canninoboids, and anti-depressants?”

Craig pointed to a paragraph on the next page. “Some of it was in the water.”

Vivian dropped the papers on the desk. “Now we know what we are dealing with. But we still don’t know who. Or how they got in here.”

“What did you find out with the secretaries?” Craig asked.

From the couch, JT yelled, making Emma jump, then he rolled off the couch into a heap, waking himself. Craig went to him and helped him up.

JT rubbed a hand over his face. “Sorry man, I don’t sleep well away from Dani. I haven’t gotten more than a few hours since I got here.”

Craig peered at him closely, only noticing for the first time how his skin seemed to hang off his face and how dark the areas under his eyes were. “You sure, JT? That seemed like a pretty hardcore nightmare.”

JT nodded and turned away, then dropped back onto the couch.
